Adding Fractions

When it comes to addition (and subtraction), fractions require that some conditions be met before we can perform mathematical operations on them. It is easier to work with simple fractions than compound fractions (sometimes called mixed numbers) so convert any compound fractions to simple fractions. To add fractions the denominators in both must be the same. One of the quickest ways to make denominators equivalent is to multiply one fraction by the other’s denominator. (Note: this does not necessarily result in the lowest common denominator). Once the denominators are equal simply add the numerators and simplify the fraction as necessary.
