What Does an Overhead Door Installer Do?

Installs and repairs overhead garage doors in new and existing buildings, using handtools and power tools: Lays out wooden or metal overhead garage door panels and hardware to drill holes in wooden panels and to position and bolt hardware to panels. Measures, levels, marks, and cuts wooden bottom door panel to fit contour of garage floor. Measures, cuts, nails, and staples stop molding to door jamb and weather stripping to bottom door panel. Stacks and aligns door panels across garage opening and bolts remaining hardware to door panels to form complete overhead door. Bolts brackets to vertical and horizontal tracks and bolts tracks to door jambs and ceiling struts to install tracks for overhead door. Assembles, positions, and secures torsion bar assembly; winds and secures springs on torsion bar; and attaches winding cable to door and winding drum that raises overhead door, using power tools, handtools, and winding bars. Assembles automatic door opener, and fabricates and installs angle iron ceiling supports. Bolts door opener to ceiling supports to install door opener. Assembles, positions, wires, and bolts photo-eye-beam assembly to door jambs. Plugs in door opener cord to power source, activates door opener to test operation, and adjusts overhead door mechanisms and controls to complete installation of door, applying knowledge of overhead door installation and operation. May repair overhead doors and automatic door openers. May install overhead garage doors that utilize extension springs to facilitate lifting of door. May install and repair commercial overhead doors and automatic door openers, applying knowledge of mechanics, carpentry, and electricity, and be known as Overhead Door Technician (construction), Overhead Garage Door Hanger (construction), or Overhead Garage Door Mechanic (construction).
