Geodesist Job Description

Description: Studies the size, shape, and gravitational field of earth. Employs surveying and geodetic instruments, such as transits, theodolites, and other engineering instruments. Sets up and improves the network triangulation over earth's surface to provide fixed points for use in making maps and establishing benchmarks (known points of elevation). Performs gravimetric surveying to determine variations in earth's gravitational field, and provides data used in the determination of weight, size, and mass of earth. Utilizes mathematics and physics to measure the tangible qualities of land, sea and other topological features of the earth. Analyzes topological data to contribute towards the knowledge base for projects and research initiatives. Calculates and measures exact horizontal and vertical position points on the earth's surface. Gathers survey data and verifies correctness and accuracy through mathematical methods. Heads and executes field surveys, survey activities, and survey personnel. Procures, calibrates and maintains survey equipment and technologies.
