Moving the Employee and Family
The employee and family will travel to the new location by car or plane. Depending on the method of transportation and the distance involved, this may take a single day or an entire week.
While the transferring family is in transit, the company can expect to pay for the cost of the:
- transportation
- lodging
- meals (depending on company policy)
If the method of transportation is by air, then the cost of the tickets plus any baggage charges is reimbursed. If travel is by car, then mileage is paid at the rate established by the company for that year. The company advises the employee's previous manager and new manager when the relocation will occur.
Sometimes the employee has to go to the new site before their family.
Q: Why would the employee need to go to the new site before their family?
A: There are several possible reasons:
- immediate need for the employee to assume the new job responsibilities
- an inability to sell the old home
- a desire to wait until the end of the school year before transferring children to new schools
In these cases, the employer usually pays for the employee’s temporary housing until the family can join the employee. Though it might seem easiest for the employer to put the employee in a hotel, it may be more efficient and comfortable to find a furnished apartment for the employee. There are also residence hotels that cater to long-term stays.
