Benefits Benchmarking Survey

Benchmarking employer-provided employee non-cash benefits is the focus of the 2023 Benefits Benchmarking Survey. The report emphasizes health care benefits, with additional sections on paid time off, retirement, life and disability insurance, and executive perks. Benefits data effective January 1, 2023, was provided by 88 respondents representing over 88,000 employees. Data for 116 medical plans and 108 dental plans in the United States were collected. The report provides a timely baseline for employers wishing to benchmark their health plan costs and practices with other employers. This is the 16th annual benchmarking survey published by ERI Salary Surveys. It provides current data that may be used to identify trends in health care costs and coverage so that informed decisions may be made for effective benefits management.


Representation by region in the United States is as follows:

  • Northeast - 20%
  • North Central - 31%
  • Southeast - 12%
  • South Central - 21%
  • West Coast - 19%

Types of primary medical plans offered in the United States are as follows:

  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) - 80%
  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) - 10%
  • Point of Service (POS) - 6%
  • Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) - 3%
  • Indemnity - 0%

Types of dental plans offered in the United States are as follows:

  • Dental Preferred Provider Organization (DPPO) - 83%
  • Dental Maintenance Organization (DMO) - 9%
  • Dental Point of Service (DPOS) - 4%
  • Dental Indemnity - 2%
  • Dental Exclusive Provider Organization (DEPO) - 1%
  • Reimbursement - 0%
