Job Summary

Description:
  • Performs any combination of following tasks to prepare medical and veterinary specimens for laboratory testing: Receives incoming package of specimens and requisition forms, inspects items for completeness, correctness of information, and condition of specimens, and records results on inventory sheet.
  • Attaches label with unique laboratory number (accessions number) on each specimen container and requisition.
  • Pours specimen fluid from master tube into test tubes to create required number of test samples.
  • Enters required patient and customer data, testing codes, and billing information into computer system, using computer keyboard or bar code reading equipment.
  • Prints bar code labels, using bar code printer, and attaches bar code labels to samples and requisition forms.
  • Prepares reagents and media for use in laboratory tests, using standard formulas. *Centrifuges, stains, slices, mounts, or performs other tasks to prepare specimens for testing.
  • Conducts simple tests and sets up testing equipment under direction of other laboratory workers.
  • Delivers sample test tubes to laboratory for testing and stores original specimen tubes in designated area of refrigerator or freezer.
  • Completes requisition forms and packages and forwards specimens to outside laboratories for tests unavailable on site.
  • Photocopies, microfilms, and files documents and forwards test results to customers.
  • Reviews all specimens, documents, and computer files and notifies designated staff of errors.
  • Answers telephone and provides information to customers.
