IRS to Colleges and Universities: Pay Your Taxes and Document Your Pay!

The results were a long time coming from the IRS report on colleges and universities (the questionnaires were sent out in 2008), but all nonprofits should take a look at the final report issued last week. The IRS states that it has “identified some significant issues...that may well be present elsewhere across the tax-exempt sector,” including unrelated-business ventures, and “the importance of using appropriate comparability data when setting compensation.”

The Budget and Legislative Sub-Committee of the Pennsylvania legislature was asked to compare compensation of for-profit and nonprofit human service contractors. The resulting report, released last week, may surprise some readers.

Buried in the 2014 White House Budget – E-filing for All Nonprofits

While there are many issues that affect nonprofits in President Obama’s proposed budget (see Independent Sector for more details), one proposal of special interest to ERI is the request for Congress to require nonprofits to file all Forms 990 electronically and to encourage the IRS to release the data to the public in a format ready for computer use.
