Job Description: Forms sand molds for production of metal castings, using hand tools, power tools, patterns or match plates, and flasks, and applying knowledge of variables, such as metal characteristics, molding sand, contours of patterns, and pouring procedures. A combination of over one year of directly related training and/or experience is typically required for carrying out the responsibilities for this job.: Positions drag half of pattern and flask on follow board. Sprinkles or sprays parting agent on pattern and flask and positions reinforcing wire in flask. Sifts sand over pattern, using riddle and presses sand around contours of pattern. Shovels sand into flask and packs it in place, using hand ramming tools or pneumatic hammer. Turns drag over and positions cope half of pattern and flask on drag. Repeats molding operation to make cope. Lifts cope from drag and removes pattern. Cuts runner and sprue hole into mold and repairs damaged impressions, using molder's hand tools, such as slick, trowel, spoon, and sprue cutter. Positions specified cores in drag and reassembles cope and drag. Signals Bridge or Gantry Crane Operator to move and position large flasks, patterns, and bottom boards, or moves them, using chain hoist. Pours molten metal into mold, using ladle, or directs Metal Pourer to fill mold. May form and assemble slab cores around pattern to reinforce mold, using hand tools and glue.
