Job Description: Inspects, trims, and shapes hooves of horses, selects or makes shoes, and fits, shapes, and nails shoes to horses' hooves. Removes worn or defective shoe from hoof, using nail snippers and pincers. Examines hooves to detect bruises, cracks, and infections and to determine trimming required. Cleans, trims, and shapes hooves, using claw, knife and snippers. Measures hooves, using calipers and steel tape. Selects aluminum or steel shoe according to hoof measurements and animal usage. May place leather pad, sponge, or oakum-pine tar mixture on bruised or cracked hoof for protection. Shapes shoe to fit hoof, using swage, forge, and hammer. Nails shoe to hoof and files hoof flush with shoe. A combination of over one year of directly related training and/or experience is typically required for carrying out the responsibilities for this job.: May make horse shoes by selecting and cutting the metal and heating the shoes in a forge and shaping them on anvils, hammering them to size. May force steel bar into shoe. May be involved in correcting the horse's legs or stance such as rectifying bent legs or limb deformation in foals.
