Job Description:
Participates in the production, measurement, and creation of maps, mapping coordinates, software, databases, and other materials related to mapmaking. Produces paper and web-delivered electronic maps of geographical areas to show natural and constructed features, political boundaries, and other features, using desktop publishing, computer graphics, and multimedia software. Typically requires four years of postsecondary training in a closely-related field along with well-developed mapping skills and knowledge of computer-assisted mapping equipment and software; however, some companies may accept equivalent education and experience combined.: Analyzes and interprets information from a range of sources, including surveyors' notes, aerial photographs, remote sensing satellite imagery, and existing maps and records. Prepares reports and document drafts. Researches databases and library resources. Views photographs and other reference materials, such as old maps and records, and examines corresponding area of map to identify specified topographical features and contour lines. Identifies location and scaled distances between control points and reference lines. Examines reference materials to detect omission of topographical features, poor register, or other defects.
