Job Summary

  • Inspects, trims, and shapes hooves of horses, selects or makes shoes, and fits, shapes, and nails shoes to horses' hooves.
  • Removes worn or defective shoe from hoof, using nail snippers and pincers.
  • Examines hooves to detect bruises, cracks, and infections and to determine trimming required.
  • Cleans, trims, and shapes hooves, using claw, knife and snippers.
  • Measures hooves, using calipers and steel tape.
  • Selects aluminum or steel shoe according to hoof measurements and animal usage.
  • May place leather pad, sponge, or oakum-pine tar mixture on bruised or cracked hoof for protection.
  • Shapes shoe to fit hoof, using swage, forge, and hammer.
  • Nails shoe to hoof and files hoof flush with shoe.
