OverviewWhen the Equal Pay Act was first enacted in 1963, women earned just 59 cents to every dollar that men earned. Today the pay gap has narrowed to 83 cents. Although the gender-based pay gap has narrowed, it is still a significant issue and there has been no real improvement in recent years. This course examines the reasons for the pay gap and explains how to screen for it and subsequently correct it, if necessary. The course will also review legislative and legal action that has had an impact on the gender-based pay gap, and enforcement by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
Learning Objectives:
  • Differentiate between access discrimination and valuation discrimination
  • Identify possible reasons for a gender-based pay gap
  • Recognize how women’s workforce participation, job segregation, job experience, and cultural norms have impacted the pay gap
  • Recognize how education, unions, and civil rights legislation have helped to close the pay gap
  • Specify how gender-based pay differentials are permitted under the Equal Pay Act
  • Determine how two jobs may be substantially equal
  • Differentiate between the concepts of equal pay and comparable worth
  • Recognize trends in pay transparency
  • Identify factors used to set equitable pay
