In continuing our look at salary trends for executive occupations (see 2013 and 2012), this analysis compares salaries between 2013 and 2014 submissions to ERI Salary Surveys for both nonprofit and for-profit reports. For each year, total averages were calculated by job title and included all available data to maximize sample size.
The data comprised 1,190 job titles common to both years. In 2014, there were contributions from 545 organizations, while 2013 had contributions from 578 organizations. Titles with fewer than 10 observations in either year were dropped from the analysis, resulting in 345 titles for comparison.
Salaries for 52% of the benchmark jobs increased from 2013 to 2014. Across the entire sample, the average change in salary was 1.5%. In terms of raw dollars, this translated to an average increase of $1,290 annually. These are similar trends to what we reported in 2013.
In addition to examining overall trends, we compared salary changes for eight executive titles, shown in the table below. 2014 appears to have been a large growth year for executive positions. Seven of the eight executive titles saw relatively large increases in base salary from 2013, with Chief Marketing Officer essentially staying the same. Sample sizes for these executive positions were comparable to 2013.
All of these comparisons are independent of organization and incumbent. That is, no data points were matched to specific entries from the prior year. These changes reflect general trends rather than specific industry or organization changes.
