Last week, the Senate Finance Committee released a 19-page paper outlining tax reform options which would affect tax exempt organizations and charitable giving. The report reviews current law and presents some possible changes in four areas: the charitable deduction, the taxation of nonprofit commercial activity, the political and lobbying activities of exempt organizations, and a final catch-all category for other tax-exempt issues. GuideStar Report Finds Female Charity CEOs Get Paid Less

Based on analysis of data from its annual 2012 Nonprofit Compensation Report, GuideStar has created an infographic that illustrates the impact of gender on compensation in the nonprofit sector. The report analyzes total compensation paid by 77,449 tax exempt organizations for 116,807 positions, as reported on Forms 990 for FY 2010. [More]

IRS to Colleges and Universities: Pay Your Taxes and Document Your Pay!

The results were a long time coming from the IRS report on colleges and universities (the questionnaires were sent out in 2008), but all nonprofits should take a look at the final report issued last week. The IRS states that it has “identified some significant issues...that may well be present elsewhere across the tax-exempt sector,” including unrelated-business ventures, and “the importance of using appropriate comparability data when setting compensation.”

Buried in the 2014 White House Budget – E-filing for All Nonprofits

While there are many issues that affect nonprofits in President Obama’s proposed budget (see Independent Sector for more details), one proposal of special interest to ERI is the request for Congress to require nonprofits to file all Forms 990 electronically and to encourage the IRS to release the data to the public in a format ready for computer use.
