PAQ eDOT Vanished Job Hall of Fame
(Log of Disappeared American Jobs)
When ERI began its enhancement of the U.S. Dictionary of Occupational Titles (last revision before abandonment: 1991), it established the ERI Job Availability Survey that relies upon a host of sources to assist in determining whether an occupation still exists within the United States (see ERI’s Job Availability Survey). Technology, world trade, both U.S. political parties’ support of exporting manufacturing jobs, environmental and labor laws unfavorable to employers, and other factors have combined to see an unprecedented change in the nature and diversity of work within America. Over ½ of the 3 million jobs lost in 2003 were in the position and work content diverse manufacturing sector; growth sectors in 2003-2004 are service and public administration where skills are the focus.
The old DOT had 12,741 job (many more titles) descriptions and occupations. As PAQ adds new emerging jobs to its enhanced Dictionary of Occupational Titles and eliminates others, the number of eDOT jobs varies based, in part, on a job’s availability falling below a “substantial numbers threshold” which is now recordings less than: 15
(Substantial numbers definitions are used in disability assessments. At this time, PAQ’s Job Availability Survey has over 15 million measures, representing approximately 10% of the working US population. eDOT’s long-term goal is: less than 150, nationally, with a standard deviation of 50,allowing for an error of 1 in 100 at the common ALJ ruling rate of 250.)
Jobs listed below were reported to have existed in 1991 by the U.S. Government. The eDOT Project has not recently detected these jobs in substantial numbers in salary surveys, job postings, Internet jobboards, workers’ compensation claims records, Internet inquiries, field job analysts’ reviews, or interactive online Internet surveys. If the reader should know of the existence of any of these occupations, please email ERI at with reference specifics. ERI will gladly investigate and correct any errors upon proof that these jobs still exist within the U.S. states or territories.
Today’s job removed from the eDOT is that of:

It joins the daily log that was created at the inception of PAQ’s development of the eDOT database. eDOT contains an Archive edition as one of its six editions, using a read-only unchanging database for those interested in these old occupations and their descriptions. This archived, public domain information dataset is free. All other editions utilize the updated eDOT database and require an annual subscription.
