QUESTION: When trying to access Help for an Assessor Series® application or eDOT®, the error message "Unable to open the file E:\sub\erigahelp.cnt" (or something similar) appears.
Each of the Assessor Series applications and PAQ's enhanced Dictionary of Occupational Titles (eDOT) have their own Help program (a separate application). There are several key files that are needed to run any of the Help programs, including *.hlp (the main Help application), *.cnt (the Table of Contents file) and the *.gid file (a file that includes reference information used by the *.hlp file).
When an ERI application is installed, the *.gid file is not part of that installation, and only the *.hlp and *.cnt files are part of the installation. Instead, the *.gid file is auto-created in the application's directory (for example c:\eri\erigawin\) after the first time the Help program for that ERI application is used.
If someone accesses Help when running a demo application from the CD-ROM (without having installed the ERI application to their hard drive or a network drive), then the *.gid file is auto-created under c:\Documents and Settings\[USER]\Local Settings\Application Data\Help\.
If that same user then installs the ERI application to their hard drive or a network drive, runs that application, and then tries to access Help, they may receive an error similar to the one noted above. This is because the *.gid file has not yet been created in the application's directory, and the old *.gid file (from when the Help program was run from the CD-ROM) still exists under c:\Documents and Settings\[USER]\Local Settings\Application Data\Help\. The *.hlp file ends up using the old reference information from this *.gid file. Consequently, if the user does not still have the Platform Library® CD-ROM in the appropriate drive, then the error message will appear.
Solution: Please find and delete the appropriate *.gid file from c:\Documents and Settings\[USER]\Local Settings\Application Data\Help\. The *.gid files for the Assessor Series applications and eDOT Help programs are named as follows:
